Montessori World

An educational blog for children and adults

Montessori Association of Malaysia

I don’t think I ever mention about the existence of a Montessori association in Malaysia, which I hope and believe will be like the Montessori Association in UK under the umbrella organisation Montessori St Nicholas Charity. I understand that Pn Aisha Z Abdullah is the founder and president of the association. The homepage website looks very promising, however there is still a lot of work to be done to achieve the organisation’s mission, objective and other areas of the organisation.

I have placed the link of the MAM (Montessori Association of Malaysia) under the MONTESSORI category at the side column.

  2. Hi,

I am interested in Montessori Method and plan to enroll on the course. But i found that most of the College that provide the course is outside KL, e.g. Subang Jaya/Petaling Jaya. Appreciate very much if you can provide information where i can get the course in KL area.

PS: I tried to find Montessorian World International that was at Megan Avenue 2 (Yap Kwan Seng) but maybe they moved to new place and i could not find them. Hope you can advise their new place and how to contact them.

Thanks in advance for your kind attention.

    Best Regards,

  3. Joey: Yes, I am a Malaysian. R u practising Montessori method in any setting?

Yudit: well done for deciding to enrol urself in a Montessori course. It is important to choose the best college in spite of the distance. Attend a preview of the course at the college before committing to one. I know some people who actually go to overseas in the hope to be under the tutelage of genuine Montessori lecturers.
Anyway, I’ll try to look for the Montessorian World International you mentioned in the post.

Sue: Visit MCI + NAMC + MEWI websites. They conduct distant courses. The links are at the sidebar under the title ‘Montessori Course elsewhere’.

    Comment by rani | April 29, 2009

  39. Sue:

I am currently taking a distant learning course (with tutorial & workshop contact hours) run by Malaysian Child Resource Institute(MCRI) and they are affiliated to Montessori World Educational Institute (MWEI) http://www.montessoriworld.org/

So far, I’m REALLY glad there are contact hours, cos it really helps. And I am very happy I went with MCRI, the principal is very kind and passionate, as are the lecturers. However, they are not as as organized as other Montessori course providers but that was not an important criteria for me.

Unless you are SUPER DUPER disciplined, best not to take a pure distant learning course! Its not a tough course but to be around fellow Montessorians is such an inspiration!

Btw, MCRI’s email is mcri@streamyx.com tel is 03-9132 1748, speak to Michelle or Ruth or Mrs Liew.

Whomever you go with, all the best and may your journey be a wonderful one!

As for a 6 month Montessori course, try to be in touch with me personally as I am a certified Montessori Trainer with Malaysian Child Resource Institute which runs the Montessori World Education Institute (US) Cert and Diploma course. 68. Rani, your blog is great! I’ve got so much to share and need some ideas as well.
I own a Montessori School in Bukit Jalil. We’re expanding next year and I need teachers. Homeroom directress for the Seniors (5-6years) and a Mandarin Teacher. Check out our blog it’s http://www.themontessoriplace.com or contact me at themontessoriplace@gmail.com
Since we’re expanding, I need some ideas for our garden, besides outdoor gym and playhouses what could I do to make my school more Montessori? Was thinking of having a vegetable farm, any ideas on what I can do in my garden for the children to appreciate nature?
I also wanted to share with you that there is a Shop in The Summit that sells Montessori Materials, their prices are reasonable. Its called USL. Think it’s on the 2nd or 3rd floor.
For those of you interested in learning about Montessori Methods, there are two workshops coming up. One is on the 5th & 6th of December (Montessori Methods) and another is Montessori for Special Needs which falls on the 12th & 13th of December. I think each workshop is from 9.00am to 5.00pm and costs RM390 per workshop. If a group of 5 go together, there’s a discount of RM40. Anyone wanna join me for the Special Needs session? All certificates are Internationally endorsed. I’ll get more info and update you here.

Secondly, congrats on the expansion of your school and I’m sure teachers will be flocking your gate at this time. It’s just a matter of getting the fine one.

Thirdly, I’ve tried to access your school’s website but was of no avail. Check with the server/ISP you registered to make sure it’s up and running.

Fourthly, regarding the outdoor area, some suggestions would be a vegetable/herb/flower patch, pet area, messy creative play like sandpit, recyclable material area etc. Ideas are abound I’m sure from you, implement the first idea first with help from parents if possible.

And lastly, thanks for the info on Montessori shop and courses! Really appreciate it.

I wish to work with kindergartens in KL & Selangor for the time being. Do you think this is the main concern so far in kindergarten? and do you think this is interesting topic?

  85. Hi Rani,
i am not a teacher by profession but i do love children and very interested to learn early childhood education particularly the Montessori method of teaching, i always dream to have my own “little school” when the right time comes. I’m so glad to find your blog. Thanks a lot, God bless!

  86. Alex Ewe: apology for the late reply! thanks for reading my blog, which has been lacking and lagging recently.

I’m always pleased to meet people who organises events related to children. In fact, I would also love to learn about the world of event management, learning about marketing strategies, advertising, publicity and promotion.

    To answer your questions about:
    1) The main concern in kindy, such as health and environment issues.
Yes, health is the general topic of conversation and lessons in the school. We cultivate and instill healthy habits, like eating vegetables, brushing teeth, washing hands after using toilet and cover their mouth when sneezing or coughing.
Environmental issue is a subject that is hardly discussed or practiced. Most of the time we recycle and reuse plastic bottles/carton boxes to make art work. I have a friend who does invention workshop with junk/recyclable materials. Would be good to invite academia to talk abt this too. Sustainable community is the new talk of the town nowadays.

Other topics worth consider are: literature (recent children literacy festival in spore), homeschooling, science and technology exhibition/ science fair, basic financial knowledge, how children can benefit from good outdoor setting and talks on children with special needs.

Hope my input has charged your plan a little bit!

  91. Hi! Anu. Sorry to hear about your predicament. There are many such people in whatever business. Did you pay by cash or cheque? If you paid by cheque you can still take action at the small claims court. I hope people like these do not join our vocation just to make money. Where children are concerned it must be passion, too. Wish you the best!

I empathise with your situation, and what I would suggest is to consult a lawyer, who usually charges a minimal amount of fee for consultation purpose. And I can’t help to wonder why did you wait for two years to settle this predicament? RM12k is not a small amount, and I’m sure documents have also been signed. Bring all relevant papers and info to a lawyer.

  124. As far as I am concern, I still find that Montessori system has the best approach to children. It is graded and systematic. It is the concept of it, the value and the philosophy of how a child will learn and how the directress observe and approach. However, the sad thing is that most Malaysian (Chinese) especially don’t see the beauty of this system. What impresses them are nothing lesser than being more academic and uniforms from as early as possible. Playschool is jst for playing. Montessori mst be advertised more to sound more convincing.

  133. Hi Rani,

Your blog has been really helpful. I’ve been searching for info on Montessori qualification in Malaysia but couldn’t find any which did not confuse me further!

I would like to obtain a Montessori qualification but I’m confused with the various teaching centres, certifications and accreditation out there. Based on my research, the AMI-accredited qualification is the best and most internationally-recognised. Anything apart from this, I should probably be more careful before enrolling in the course…!

Can you shed a light or two on the routes to qualifying as a Montessori teacher – I’m looking for an internationally-recognised qualification as I move around alot with my husband. We are currently in KL but will probably move overseas in the next 2-3 years. I don’t want to have spent years training as a “Montessori” teacher here in KL only to find that it’s not recognised elsewhere. I have a bachelor’s degree, post-graduate qualification (law), have worked in the corporate world for 8 years before becoming a teacher last year (I worked in an American-based enrichment centre in Dubai). What do you think is the best qualification to study, based on my background?

When I was living in London, I went for the MCI open day. I understand they have an overseas centre (SEGI college). If I was to study for the Montessori qualification in this institution, will there also be practical teacher training in local Montessori schools where I’ll have to fulfil a number of hours in the classroom?

Thanks in advanced for your response and sorry this is long!

  143. Syareena: Sincerest apologies for the very late reply. Your post needed considerable thought from my side and I am not sure whether I’m the right person to give you any suggestions regarding this. Apart from that, I was tight up by work, friends and other interests/pursuits.
I am wondering whether you have completed your course and joining the work force now, and if you have, I’m sure your effort for your dissertation has been a superbly journey for you.
On my side, I still feel obliged to answer your questions as detailed as I could:
    1) How can i get the guidelines on create/build/develop the montessori school in Malaysia?
There are a lot of publications regarding Montessori’s work and her philosophy in the market. You could always google, or visit SEGi College Subang Jaya’s library, or the local bookstores. I personally have Montessori International magazines that are stocked in my precious little shelf.

    2) Can you recommend the best montessori preschool in City Center (Kuala Lumpur) for my case study?
I couldn’t really answer this question here for I don’t think there is a strictly/full Montessori school in Malaysia.

    3) Last but not lease, for architecture, i’m proposed to design a kindergarten (with Montessori Programme) at LRT station (specifically at Dang Wangi PUTRA station) which my target is cater for working parents in the city which used the LRT as their trasportation.
If you are looking into building a Montessori kindergarten in the LRT station, I’m not so sure how would this work because in a nutshell, Montessori’s curriculum emphasises on the children’s connection with nature, natural outdoor play, lots of space for their further exploration and learning.

My views above are extremely limited and I welcome opinion from readers worldwide.

  145. Cyndy: It is certainly a long post ;)
AMI-accredited qualification is certainly originally approved by Maria Montessori herself. However, it is not easily available in all countries around the world and they do not offer correspondence/distance-learning course. Check their website (details at the right column of my blog).
There are many other organisations offering Montessori courses- MCI, Modern MOntessori International, MWEI, NAMTA and many more (details at their websites at the right column of my blog too). And they provide correspondence learning, as well as allowing you to do teaching practice at your closest Montessori school.

Regarding accreditation and availability to work at other countries, I received mixed responses regarding this and the best thing to do is to check the schools of what kind of qualification do they exactly want.

  163. Beware The Junior Academy in Kuala Lumpur! This so-called Montessori school is not even registered with the Malaysian Ministry of Education, which is why all their teachers are labeled Consultants. Feel free to visit their website and check it out for yourself. In addition, you will notice the lack of education credentials amongst the staff, especially in regards to the Acting Academy Director.

Comment by Brad Lee | May 27, 2011

  164. I am surprised by Brad Lee’s comments which seemed rather vicious. I am a parent of a student there for a year now but my experience was the exact opposite of his. I find the Junior Academy run by people who know what they are doing and who truly believe, love and have embraced the philosophy of Maria Montessori. There are so many Montessori schools out there having problems keeping the concept due to parental pressures on academics and the difficulty getting teachers who are qualified, sincere, and passionate. But I digressed. Sometimes there are disgruntled ex-staff going around disparaging their former employers. Its always wise to visit a school, ask those tough questions, meet the teacher of the class, check the costs, and then make your own decisions. I did.

    Comment by WA | June 3, 2011

  165. My niece is studying in The Junior Academy and I am very impressed with the 100% fully montessori concept and the well qualified teachers. Though it is slightly expensive than the kindergarten, its really worth every
penny. I will definitely recommend this pre-school to all my circle of friends. I am also bringing my son who will be 2 1/2 years old for the 7th June 2011 at 2.00 pm – Introduction of Intant/toddler program in the montessori method at the Junior Academy.

  166. We have been struggling for years to get our child to go to school since he was 3. He will cry every morning. We have tried many different schools with different teaching methods and it all failed, needless to say it severely affected his learning progress until we sent him to The Junior Academy. The first thing we noticed was his excitement to go to school every morning, he was even able to catch-up with his other classmates much to our surprise. The most unexpected surprise was that not only he behaves in school, his behaviour at home improved tremendously as well. But of course The Junior Academy is not perfect, from all my years of experience trying to deal with our son, whatever they are doing wrong is pale in comparison to what they are doing right, not to mentioned that they are constantly improving as well. The one thing they did right recently was they terminated the services of one of their teachers, and coincidently I noticed a lot of negative things being written about The Junior Academy all over the internet lately, which I am suspecting “Brad Lee” is actually that teacher Ms. Leena. Our experience with a lot of so called “international” schools in this country is not that the teachers must have the right skill sets but rather the right look, people like Ms. Leena for example. In our experience, if she was in the usual “international” school, most probably she would have gotten away with it just because she looks like what is considered a typical “westerner.” So I concur with WA. Go and visit the school because it works for us but does not necessary means it works for you.

    Comment by TZ | June 7, 2011

  167. Jean, finding the best or appropriate school can be quite tiresome at times. Talk to the teachers and principals about your concern, and share with them your goals for your sons. If needed, list out the goals and set an appropriate time frame to achieve them. And at the end of the day, if your children achieve half of the goals and are happy to be in the school, at least you have make sure that they have a memorable childhood.

  173. The Junior Academy is a cruel prank played on unsuspecting parents in the local affluent community. It is operated by a married couple with absolutely no background in education besides having kids themselves. Everything is trial and error. The institute has devolved from a Fastrackids franchisee, to an international preschool, to a montessori-based academy in the span of 2 years. Instead of hiring actual educators to call the shots, they would rather rely on Feng Shui Consultants and lucky fish tanks to help generate a positive flow. The ultimate result is a mismanaged, educational drive-thru where both staff, students and school curriculum come and go without warning. The school only remains open because the owner is too proud to lose face.

Comment by Tony Tan | July 7, 2011

  174. OMG! I think my daughter had a trial class at this school. Was it based in a shopping mall in Bangsar? It looked more like an expensive toy store than an actual school.

    Comment by Sharon | July 7, 2011

  175. Wow, I have checked with the academy. These posts have been fabricated by a disgruntled employee whom I was told was asked to leave due to bad behavior. I guess you can’t trust everything you read on the net these days. I find the accusations somewhat wild, vicious and vindictive. It doesn’t sound like a parent. I have a kid in the school and it’s bustling with very nice parents, even though they seemed affluent. I guess its because its a nice neighbourhood. There was an earlier post by a different name similar to that on this blog. Hmmmmm, there are all kinds in this world. It is important to check out all schools yourself and make your own conclusions.

  194. Ambika: Montessori emphasises the holistic development of a child which is impossible to describe in one or more sentences in this blog. Start by reading about it on websites. More importantly, whether Montessori or any other education method, your daughter should grow gracefully and happily in any kind of learning environment. The best way to choose a kindergarten is to pay a visit to the setting while bringing your child along with you.

  263. Hello
It is a pleasure to see the this blog .you are doing such great work. I pray that you continue to spread the awareness for Montessori method.
When I was browsing through your website ,I felt the goals and the thought process is exactly what I believe in ! It is a passion for me . I to want to see ,if possible,ALL children benefiting from it :)
I have done my course from AMI – Bangalore almost two decades ago . Worked under the guidance of my guru Mrs Meenakshi Shvaramakrshnan at IMTC for 7 years. While assisting at IMTC I also took over the role of establishing a Montessori house of children . I wanted to implement the method and see the results first hand . With Ms Sheena as the proprietor and me as the Principal and by Gods grace we did excellent work with children in Little Feat Montessori house of children Koramangala Bangalore.
I pulled out from Little Feat after 15 years of amazing experience because of my family commitments and also because I wanted to reach out to many more children and teachers. The requirement for teachers at little feat had made me conduct in house orientation programs . It is during these short term programs that I realised a little bit if exposure and awareness can go a long way . It worked two ways , One – we got excellent staff for our 180 children and Two – we managed to spread the word to hundreds of parents and to-be teachers. I also conducted full time one year diploma progran in affiliation with IIMS bangalore for two years .

Meanwhile , my passion made me to travel to places where there was no accessibility or affordibilty to Montessori training centres. It is the experience of travelling to – Mysore – Kannur – Ernakulum – Tirur which has given me the conviction that the Montessori method is certainly unique :)

I have now formed a team under the name Montessorians United which has like minded people with common goal of “Montessori”.
I am sending you a brief introduction ..kindly do keep us in mind if at any time there is a need for these courses to be conducted at the cities or countries of schools/ individuals requiring the know how of the method . We would love to travel and conduct the course depending on the need.

    :)

    Wishing you all the best

    Sincerely
    Munira

    —————————————————————————————————————————
    Montessorians United
We are a team of experienced Montessorians with the passion of reaching out to as many pre primary teachers as possible . We believe that the age group of pre primary children is the most important phase of a child’s learning period .The teachers for this age group children are most of the times untrained and unaware of the child’s potential and needs.
In our journey with children we have realised that Dr Montessori discovered an excellent formula to assist the child s development and growth during this most sensitive learning time .We feel that ,the only reason why the method has not reached each and every child is because of the dearth of trained staff and the limitation of having specific Montessori teaching aid materials developed by Dr Montessori .
The Montessori teacher training is a lengthy process and since it is not just theory knowledge but also a lot of practical training is required , it becomes necessary for a face to face training to be conducted . It is difficult for many working teachers and mothers to take out so much time for a full time course. Another difficulty is that most of the recognised training centres are located in few cities of India and it is impractical for most of the teachers or parents to travel and relocate to a different city where the training centres are located. This situation at times forces genuinely interested and keen teachers and parents to take up distance or online programs. Montessori teacher training is a skill which is a combination of observation -lesson planning- keeping pace with the child’s needs and therefore cannot be done only via distance learning mode.
0ur team of Montessorians United has developed a unique blend of face to face skill development classes and study at home modules

    A) Diploma program in Montessori method of education
This course gives a complete insight into the method of Montessori philosophy and its practical implementation The contact classes will be organised at a convenient location for the students .After the contact classes the students will be able to access the tutors on skype for follow up sessions .The students will have the flexibility to go through the theory modules at their own pace .The maximum time given to complete the course is ten months . A diploma will be awarded after viva exams are conducted .
    Registrations are open
