Montessori World

An educational blog for children and adults

Montessori Centenary Celebration

Montessorians around the world are applauding the new year 2007 by uniting with one voice to affirm the work started by Dr Maria Montessori100 years ago in the Casa dei Bambini in Rome, Italy. I was really mesmerized and impressed by this excerpt taken from her book The Formation of Man:

“A new education from birth onward must be built up. Education must be constructed and based on the laws of nature and not on the preconceived notions and prejudices of adult society.”

I couldn’t help to ‘feel’ the strength in the above paragraph. What with all the classroom planning based on the Education’s Department of Foundation Stage Planning and Early Learning Goals, while foregoing the very principles of Maria Montessori’s pedagogy in the classroom. How much freedom do we really give the children to be able to explore the materials or any other resources in the classroom? How frequent do they really keep in touch with Mother Nature?

I am organising a Montessori exhibition in the school. I am also still trying to find the original logo depicting a child paddling his own canoe, which was made into a pewter badge for graduates by Dr Maria Montessori.

I wish to make a significant mark this year to celebrate Dr Montessori’s historical event.
