Montessori World

An educational blog for children and adults

My two cents.

“And so we discovered that education is not something which the teacher does……but that it is a natural process which develops spontaneously in the human being.”

— Dr. Maria Montessori
Take a moment to ponder on this:
“What is the role of the Montessori teacher? Why do some schools prefer the term Director/Directress?”
My two cents:
The role of the Montessori teacher is to prepare the environment by providing a conducive and comfortable learning space, equipped with adequate and age-appropriate learning tools and furniture. The learning space must be clean, neat and airy. The learning space must be facilitated with Montessori’s didactic materials and other educational materials that fulfill the quest to learn.
I strongly believe that the teacher in a Montessori environment must also show excellent communication with children whilst showing respect and interest during conversation. The teacher must be a good role model by exemplary and not just by preaching.
Most Montessori schools prefer to call their teachers ‘directress’. Even some schools in the USA choose to call the teachers as ‘Montessori guide’. Personally, I always introduce myself as a ‘Montessori Educator’. I believe every human is born with a blueprint of the man they should or will become. My role is merely to facilitate by giving the education or knowledge a child needs, when they come into the classroom with the ‘whys’, ‘whats’ and ‘hows’. These questions are enough to trigger a whole lot of lessons on anything under the sky, clouds, sun or moon.  And let’s start nurturing a child in this way!
